The Most Common Use of PET Scan – Oncology

PET scan technology is used to detect brain tumors more often than not. The PET scan tool is not only useful for diagnosing Cancer. You can use it for:

Internal injuries

Brain bleeding

Infection detection

Structural abnormalities within the skull

Although the invention is powerful, it has its limitations. This means that sometimes a pet scan brain tumour test can be included. For a definitive diagnosis, additional medical tests such as X-Rays are performed. We will only be focusing on scanning technologies for this article.

There are two types of brain scans.

There are only two types of technology that can scan the brain, if you loosen your definition.

Computed Tomography (CT).

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).

There are many variations within each of these two categories. Each type is used to diagnose and treat a different type medical problem. The symptoms of the patient will determine which device is used.

Six types of brain imaging tools

Each brain imaging technique is designed to find problems in the brain and view the activity. Six methods are currently most commonly used to perform the process.

CT scan uses X-Ray to create a picture of the brain. It is a cylindrical device with a sliding table. The patient lies on the table, while the x-ray source moves in semi-circles around the head. Tube containing the source. The differential absorption of the radiation is the basis for the creation of the image. The beam is absorbed differently by different parts of the brain as it passes through them. Although bone can absorb a lot of x-rays, air is only able to absorb a very small amount. Soft tissue is located on the median. CT scans can create an outline of the brain, but they are not good at defining its structure.

Functional Activity Testing

When the brain activity needs to be checked, functional magnetic resonance imaging is used. It detects changes in:

Blood oxygen level

When neural activity is occurring, blood flows

When the mind is active, there is more blood flow to it as it is consuming more oxygen.

Therefore, fMRI can be used to create activation maps which map out specific areas of the brain that are responsible for certain cognitive functions.

Positron Emission Tomography (B) is another method to monitor brain activity. Radioactive material is used in this method. The positron is formed when the short-lived substance decomposes. The PET scan brain machine recognizes this element. The brain is more functional if it has higher radioactivity.

Testing for Electrical Activity

a) Magnetoencephalography is generally utilized in clinics and researches, but they are often helpful in aiding surgeons to localize pathology. The technology is used to analyze the brain and provide neurofeedback. The MEG machine uses a device called SQUIDs to measure the magnetic field generated by electrical movement in the brain.

b) Electroencephalography positions electrode on the scalp of a patient and then use them to create a map of mental electrical activity. EEG basically tracks the electrical signals produced by neurons in any brain. Because it is non-invasive and extremely sensitive, EEG is a widely used technology. This technique can pick up a millisecond worth of cognitive activity. It is also one of very few procedures that can accurately measure time relative to time.

Near-infrared spectrumroscopy is used to measure infrared light that falls within the 700 to 905 nm range. The light is reflected from one side onto the brain and measured as it emerges the other. The attenuation of light is determined by the amount of oxygen in the brain. This measure measures brain activity. The optical method of scanning the brain using NIRS is called "Neuro Imaging Research System".

The necessity of scanning techniques

Scanners are useful for diagnosing other conditions as well. Let's suppose a patient has suffered from intermittent, but painful headaches for some time. It is not possible to determine the cause of the headaches by performing a physical exam. Pain medication and other treatments don't cure it.

One of the above technologies can be used to scan the brain and detect the root cause. A brain scan can help a doctor diagnose the root cause of headaches and prescribe medication to treat it.
